Fagets formål er at træne de studerendes evne til syntese af den viden, de har indhentet i de øvrige kliniske og klinisk-teoretiske discipliner i studiets forløb. Dette centreres omkring akutte patientsituationer i/uden for hospitalet.

Undervisningen tager derfor udgangspunkt i korte kasuistikker, lysbilleder og videooptagelser. Emnevalget vil blandt andet omfatte: Akutte brystsmerter, synkope, kramper, den akut febrile patient, akutte socialmedicinske problemer, akut endokrinologi, det akut syge barn samt andre emner.
