Epidemiology is the research discipline, which includes studies on the occurrence and distribution of diseases as well as other health conditions in the population. In the descriptive epidemiology, the frequency of disease is investigated over time or at a given time.

In the analytical epidemiology, conditions that influence the distribution of disease incidence (so-called exposures or influences) in the population are studied.
