Immunology is the teaching of human and animal defense against the microflora of the biosphere, i.e. the teaching of the immune system, its structure and function. The immune system is part of a number of processes that determine the protection of the organism against infections, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well as some cancers.

It is involved in all forms of inflammation, including the many forms that are not triggered by microorganisms, but, for example, of physical trauma.

Collaboration between various cell types is a characteristic feature of human cellular defence systems. For example, antigen-presenting cells release signal peptides, cytokines, and present foreign antigens to T-lymphocytes, which in turn release other cytokines that activate B-lymphocytes, cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, natural killer cells, and other cells engaged in immunoinflammatory reactions.
