Kardiologi er et lægevidenskabeligt grenspeciale, der omfatter medicinske hjerte- og kredsløbssygdomme. Specialet blev udskilt fra intern medicin i 1950'erne og fik sit eget videnskabelige selskab (Dansk Cardiologisk Selskab) i 1960. Faget udøves overvejende af læger på sygehuse, men der findes også praktiserende speciallæger, i reglen overlæger med deltidspraksis.

Faget har gennemgået en rivende udvikling i takt med hjertekirurgiens udvikling, især siden midten af 1900-t. Med hjertekateterisation og ekkokardiografi er der fremkommet sikre diagnostiske procedurer som forudsætning for sikker hjertekirurgi. Mens det i begyndelsen var patienter med hjerteklapsygdomme og medfødte hjertesygdomme, der kunne tilbydes operation, lå tyngdepunktet i slutningen af 1900-t. hos patienter med hjertekransåresygdom, der tilbydes ballonudvidelsesbehandling eller bypassoperation. Pacemakerbehandling af patienter med hjerterytmeforstyrrelser er indført i 1960'erne og er siden suppleret med overbrænding af ledningsbaner inde i hjertet.

Behandlingen af hjertesygdomme med digitalis og vanddrivende lægemidler blev i slutningen af 1900-t. suppleret med et væld af lægemidler, der anvendes i behandlingen af hjerteinsufficiens og hjerterytmeforstyrrelser samt til opløsning af blodpropper i hjertet (trombolyse).

Den komplicerede udvælgelse og forberedelse af patienter før hjertetransplantation samt den medicinske efterbehandling og kontrol forestås af kardiologer.

Her er den: Den nyeste udgave af Sigurd og Sandøes milepæl af en EKG-lærebog. For medicin- og sygeplejestuderende er dette værket, der giver den ultimative indføring i elektrokardiologi, og det må derfor betragtes som både lyst- og pligtlæsning for den seriøse studerende.
I 1978 udgav Bjarne Sigurd og Erik Sandøe deres første EKG-lærebog. Den blev hurtigt udbredt til hele Norden og kom også i en engelsk version. I 1991 kom bogen i en opdateret udgave, og grundet bogens store kvaliteter blev den samtidig udgivet på tysk og engelsk.
